GoneGrey Pour Decisions: The Grey Escape

The Grey Escape: A Crisp Cocktail for Leaving the Ordinary Behind
Summer may be winding down, but there’s still time for one more refreshing escape. The Grey Escape is a bright, citrus-forward cocktail made with vodka, grapefruit, elderflower, and a sparkling finish. It’s crisp, sophisticated, and smooth enough to remind you that the only grey you need is the name.
Whether you’re enjoying the final days of summer by the pool, firing up the grill, or unwinding after a long week, this cocktail offers a refreshing way to pour back a little confidence.
What You’ll Need
Ingredients
- 2 ounces vodka
- 2 ounces fresh grapefruit juice
- ½ ounce elderflower liqueur
- ½ ounce fresh lime juice
- 1–2 ounces sparkling water
- Ice
- Fresh rosemary sprig
- Grapefruit wedge or peel for garnish
Recommended Equipment
- Cocktail shaker
- Jigger or measuring glass
- Strainer
- Rocks glass or stemless wine glass
- Citrus juicer
- Bar spoon
How to Make The Grey Escape
Step 1: Prepare Your Glass
Fill a rocks glass or stemless wine glass with fresh ice. Set it aside while you prepare the cocktail.
For an extra-cold escape, chill the empty glass in the freezer for approximately 10 minutes before adding the ice.
Step 2: Build the Flavor
Add the vodka, grapefruit juice, elderflower liqueur, and fresh lime juice to a cocktail shaker filled with ice.
The grapefruit provides a tart, refreshing base, while the elderflower adds a subtle floral sweetness that smooths out the citrus.
Step 3: Shake Things Up
Secure the lid and shake vigorously for approximately 10–15 seconds.
Unlike your hair routine, this part doesn’t require months of consistency—just give it a good shake until the outside of the shaker feels cold.
Step 4: Pour Your Escape
Strain the mixture into your prepared glass over fresh ice.
Top with one to two ounces of sparkling water, depending on how light and bubbly you prefer your cocktail.
Step 5: Add the Finishing Touch
Garnish with a grapefruit wedge or a twisted strip of grapefruit peel. Finish with a fresh rosemary sprig for an aromatic, herbal touch.
Before adding the rosemary, gently clap the sprig between your hands to release its natural oils and fragrance.
Make It Your Own
Want to customize your Grey Escape? Try one of these simple variations:
- Sweeter Escape: Add ¼ ounce of honey syrup or agave nectar.
- Bolder Escape: Replace the vodka with gin for a more botanical flavor.
- Spicy Escape: Add one thin jalapeño slice to the shaker.
- Deeper Color: Add a few muddled blackberries for a rich, natural hue.
- Extra Sparkle: Replace the sparkling water with dry prosecco.
The Zero-Proof Grey Escape
Skipping the alcohol doesn’t mean skipping the experience.
Replace the vodka and elderflower liqueur with:
- 2 ounces grapefruit juice
- 1 ounce elderflower cordial or syrup
- ½ ounce lime juice
- 2–3 ounces sparkling water
Shake the grapefruit, elderflower, and lime with ice. Strain into a fresh glass, top with sparkling water, and garnish with rosemary and grapefruit.
The Perfect Pairing
The Grey Escape pairs well with light, fresh dishes such as:
- Grilled shrimp or fish tacos
- Citrus-marinated chicken
- Goat cheese crostini
- Watermelon and feta salad
- Charcuterie with soft cheeses
- Fresh berries and dark chocolate
